
Introduction
The Contract for the Airside Infrastructure was awarded to Trinidad Contractors Limited as part of the Airport Expansion Project.
The work had to be carried out in Phases, so as to have the Airport operations functional at all times.
Project Details
The work comprised of five (5) phases which included items of work as follows:
Demolition of existing Terminal Buildings, Structures and Utilities (above and underground), Road and Airfield Pavements and Site Clearance.
Earthworks and Drainage works, including environmental protection measures.
Asphalt concrete overlay on existing apron.
Construction of Asphalt Concrete pavement extension to aircraft parking apron, including service roads.
Fuel Resistant Seal Coat and Pavement Markings.
Apron Floodlighting – concrete foundations, light poles, cabling, light fixtures and dual obstruction lights.
Remarks
Ø Safety on the project was a very important aspect and regular communications were necessary between the Airport Control Tower and the Work Site.
Ø An Asphalt Plant of Batch Type was installed on site as part of the Contract requirements for the production of Asphaltic Concrete.
Ø As part of the Contract, the company provided a Mobile Materials Laboratory for the Quality Control / Quality Assurance.
Ø Trinidad Contractors Limited utilized its Marine Support (Barge and Tug) to mobilize plant and equipment and materials to the Site. A berthing facility adjacent to the work site was upgraded to enhance this service.
Ø Bulk Bitumen (60/70 penetration grade) was stored at the Berthing area using 2 No. 40,000 gallon tanks equipped with heating and discharging facilities.
